Student Notebook- Better Grades Are Easier Than You Think
Updated Thursday, May 9th, 2024
Most students regardless of whether they are in college or grade school are ever taught how to take notes. Taking notes is such an important component to good grades. Very few have a memory where they can remember most taught in classrooms. The purpose of note-taking is to improve your recall of what is being taught or reviewed and to use it as a summary to reference later. Studies show that the act of writing in a student notebook enables us as human beings to remember much more than taking notes on a digital device.
The purpose of taking notes for students is to make it easier for studying for tests or to complete assignments and projects. Remember that note-taking should be done in point form as a summary of what is being learned or reviewed. Don’t look to write what is being taught to you word for word. This is not possible, for most students unless you are familiar with the ancient art of ‘shorthand’. Today students are using loose-leaf binders. Although they can be handy to insert pages, the same pages are easily lost when others borrow your notes.
Use a Student Notebook for better grades as they provide an easy assignment tracking and referencing index among other great features. Let’s get into it.
Why trust My Advice
I have created about 50 journals at this point of various kinds for different types of focus. I believe wholeheartedly that good journals can improve peoples’ lives. Today’s students need as much assistance as possible as colleges and professional programs are more competitive than ever before to get into them. Watching the students in my own family as a father or uncle inspired me to create a tool for them that would enable them to be their best as students. After researching the marketplace I found none that I believed would give them what they needed. So, I created it.
Seven Elements to Better Grades Using a Student Notebook
Achieving better grades obviously includes interest, good attendance, and participation. It also includes the usage of as many aids as possible. Such aids are tutors, digital online sources, and a student notebook. There are seven good reasons to use this type of notebook that most don’t think about.
Project & Assignment tracker
A good student notebook will track in a centralized location all projects and assignments, as well as their due dates. Late projects always receive the dreaded penalty of having marks off if you can even hand them in. Often students forget for one reason or another about when a project is due and will start to work on it when there is little time before it is due. A centralized location dedicated to projects and assignments allows students to easily review the list of projects they have and allocate the proper time and effort to achieve best results. Too many times students write a project due date and topic description somewhere in their binder pages and then can’t find them later.
Studying made easier through an index
The major purpose of taking notes is to find them when you want them. Studying for a test is easier when you don’t have to flip pages in frustration to find something that you need to remember or clarify. Binders of loose pages don’t have indexes where students place note headings and loose pages also don’t have numbers to easily refer to a page you want. An index reduces your studying stress and frustration and as a result increases you retention of information needed. A large component of study for a student who doesn’t keep good notes is locating the topics and information required. A student notebook with an index can increase actual study time on the subject by reducing the time wasted on searching information. It also reduces the amount of time to do an assignment in the same way.

Creating & Keeping Good Study habits
Accountability of good study habits is key to achieving your best as a student. A student notebook with a habit tracker can help a student keep track of it their studying habits. A habit tracker with a monthly, weekly, and daily tracker can help a student record and review how a well their studying habits are. A student can place on the list of wanted habits such goals as reading time, assignments time, studying and reviewing time, and anything else the person is looking to increase and achieve.
Keeping a record of what has been done is an accountability aid and it will propel you and give you a dosage of dopamine when you see that you have done what you set out to do. Your efforts will increase when you see what you should be doing. This is a tremendous self-help tool for students who use it and will positively increase their grades.
Flexible note pages
Lined loose pages in a binder will have the flexibility to take them out of the binder whenever you want. Solid-lined pages pose a problem when you want to draw something to help you remember the subject being learned. The drawing or infographic becomes messy with the lines running through it. Dotted-lined pages don’t have that issue as the dots seemingly disappear when you create a drawing next to your text. The result of the dotted lines is the flexibility students need to write across a page neatly and draw something that doesn’t look horrible. Create lines and columns easily on the page when needed. You need the flexibility to record what works for you as a student. It’s vital to your success, and solid-lined pages are truly outdated. Traditional lined pages are best for writing an assignment, book report, or something like that.
Easy referencing for clarity and understanding
It is important to refence material quickly for clarity or studying and too many students spend too much time looking up information in their written binders or books. Easy referencing is important, and a student notebook can do that with an index that you can insert a reference number specific to that specific topic you want. The numbering system can be from one to infinity. If you want to have multiple subjects in one book, just have a letter in front of the number to denote the subject. Then simply have a different number in front of the letter for the various topics within that subject. It’s recommended that students use one book per subject, but this is an option.
Discipline to write and use it as tool
One of the most negative impacting factors on student grades is that they are not writing or writing enough notes. Every student must learn to summarize and place information in bullet points. Knowing where to place information in a student’s notebook encourages them to write about what they are learning. Fill in the prompted areas and go, you don’t have to create an index as it’s there for you. A column for the reference number is also there so once again you don’t need to create one. Write your notes as you don’t need to worry about organizing your binder. Blank-lined pages can confuse you because you may not know how to organize your binder properly. Your anxiety is taken out completely with the usage of a specialized student notebook.
No loose note pages
The student notebook with numbered pages and book binding so that you cannot remove pages without ripping them from the book is an asset. The numbered pages allow easy referencing of notes through the index. The book binding allows you to keep the notes in your book without losing them. Students need to lose their notebook to lose their notes.
